Video: Students protesting against women abuse shut down Mandela Bridge

A group of Wits University students, many of which are women clad in black, shut down the Nelson Mandela Bridge in a protest sparked by a rising wave of violence against women including the gruesome murder of Karabo Mokoena.

This protest comes after news of gang rape rape of a pregnant woman who was abducted at the Nelson Mandela Bridge early this week.

The protest caused mini traffic chaos around the Nelson Mandela bridge affecting the area bordering Braamfontein and the Johannesburg central business district. Tempers rose high when some motorists tried to force their way through as reflected in the attached video.

The protesters placards had messages like; Bring back death penalty, Pussy is not a license to be killed and Don’t touch me if I’m not your property.

South Africa has been rocked by a wave of violence against women over the past few days sparking a national outcry.

The case of the 22 years old Karabo Mokoena, who was allegedly killed by her boyfriend and her body burnt beyond recognition, is one ampunst many.
