Uber ambush its way into the Soweto derby, the Pirates vs Chiefs clash

Uber is positioning itself to ride the crest wave of South Africa’s most popular sporting event, the Soweto derby which is a match between soccer giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. This could easily be ambush marketing by the global ride hailing operation, Uber.

Uber sent a short email message to customers saying: “The Pirates vs Chiefs soccer game is tomorrow! Why not Uber from the FNB Stadium?”

The Uber email also said: “Make the last weekend of 50% off Uber trips count! Take trips in and around Soweto this weekend using the promo code SEESOWETO2017 to get 50% less on your trips.”

The message seem vague enough for Uber to deny that it is hopping onto the Soweto derby by the back door.

The concerned derby takes place on Saturday the 29th of July at the FNB Stadium. The two South African football giants meet for the Carling Black Label Cup. This is a creative tournament where the players are picked by supporters by voting for the line-up via mobile phones.

The Carling Black Label Cup is almost a whole day multifaceted entertainment event that comes with music and stand up comedy. This one features award winning Hip Hop sensation Kwesta and the highly gifted Dr. Malinga. There is also comedian Mashabela Galane.

Soweto derby of all kind have traditionally been a scintillating event that draws crowds from all over the country. In the past supporters of the two teams, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, have filled the stadium with capacity to have 95 000 seated fans.
