No end in sight for the Gautrain workers strike: Here’s the new contingency plan

There is no end in sight in the Gautrain workers strike which leaves multitudes of the Gauteng rapid rail link stranded. Its been two weeks since  the United National Transport Union (UNTU) embarked on the strike forcing Gautrain to run on limited service focused on peak hours -as captured in the table below.

An attempt by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA)  to resolve the wage deadlock between the Bombela Operating Company and the UNTU has been unsuccessful.

The company said the union abandoned discussions, rejecting two additional, enhanced offers it tabled.

The company added that it “remains concerned by the detrimental effect that the strike is having not only on workers in terms of their loss of income, but also to our passengers, as well as the economy as a whole. We appreciate the fact that many of our customers use the Gautrain as their only mode of transport. We have therefore remained committed, willing and available to return to negotiations in order to find an amicable solution to the current wage deadlock.

“We would also like to reiterate the calls made by the UNTU, as well as, by the Company for intimidation and attempted acts of sabotage to be stopped with immediate effect.”
