Liberty, the South African insurance giant that has suffered an extortive cyber attack, has issued a word of caution to its clients, warning them to be vigilant.
In a note to customers Liberty says reminds them that it “has been subject to an illegal and unauthorised access to its IT infrastructure, which was largely e-mails and attachments. This matter is with the relevant authorities for an investigation.”
To this end, adds the note, we would like to inform you of the following to help you be vigilant in the protection of your data:
- Liberty will not send you an e-mail or link for you to change any of your passwords.
- It is always good practice to ensure you select strong passwords and change them on a regular basis.

This note came four days after the ransom seeking Liberty hack. The hack was discovered on Saturday and Liberty posted a statement to clients saying “An external party claims to have seized data from us, has alerted us to potential vulnerabilities in our systems and has requested compensation for this.”
Liberty added that it has “made no concessions in the face of this attempted extortion and we are working with the relevant law enforcement authorities.”
This will be worrying to many people. It may have dire implications for millions of Liberty’s clients whose personal information may be compromised. Liberty runs with R720 billion in assets under management.
The 60 years old operation has a presence in 18 African countries. It’s grown from a South African life insurer to a pan-African financial services company, offering asset management, investment, insurance and health products to 3.2 million people across Africa.
