Klerksdorp is set to earn a R1bn shopping centre towards the end of 2014 in what has been punted as significant job creating project.
The town’s mayor Mike Khauoe broke ground on the site of the Matlosana Mall this week.
Situated at the eastern entrance to the town along the N12, the 65,000m² mall is being developed by Abacus. Murray & Roberts is the lead contractor.
The mall is expected to start trading in October next year with promise to host a variety of national tenants.
The development is expected to facilitate creation of about 2000 jobs during construction and a further 1200 permanent jobs once the mall opens its doors for trading.
There is also hope that the development will benefit emerging and black contractors. Murray & Roberts is said to have appointed BTKM Quantity Surveyors to manage the BBBEE targeting and skills development on the project.
Abacus brings a wealth of experience into the development. The firm has successfully developed Cape Town’s CapeGate Regional Shopping Precinct, Waterstone Village in Somerset West and Eikestad Mall in Stellenbosch. The South African Council of Shopping Centres awarded Abacus 2010 Mall of the Year for its MooiRiver Mall in Potchefstroom.
