Smart consumers, bargain hunters, will be well advised to go somewhat light in their month end shopping for October in order to gear up for 2017 Black Friday price cuts. The 2017 edition promises to be bigger and better.
An informal poll conducted by SATopShops points to a blockbuster Black Friday which is set for November 25.
Major retailers told our reporters they are gearing up for more products and bigger cuts. Retailers polled major names like Shoprite/Checkers, Massmart (Game, Makro, Builders, Dion Wired), Truworths etc.
Black Friday price cuts have indeed grown big over the years. Last year saw discounts of up to 60% on a variety of goods and services with shops like Shoprite leading the pack and online shops like bidorbuy have jumped in.
In a conversation with our reporter Shoprite explains that “The Black Friday trend had been gaining popularity around the world, and in 2014 Checkers became the first food retailer to introduce the Black Friday concept to South Africa to kick off the Christmas sales season.
“Subsequently our competitors have followed Checkers and the world’s biggest sales promotion is now not only something that South African consumers want, but one they’ve certainly come to expect from retailers.”
Indeed, many more South African retailers have been hopping onto the Black Friday craze over the past five years. Judging by the response we got from retailers, the 2017 edition of South Africa’s Black Friday will reach block buster levels.
