Massmart CEO Guy Hayward earned R15.4 million for the 2016 financial year. The package was made of a guaranteed pay of R6.1 million plus R6.1 million in short term incentives and R757 000 in other benefits. Hayward then earned about R2.4 in long term incentives. His colleague Johannes van Llerop (CFO) earned a total of R13.2 million.
A subsidiary of American giant Walmart, Massmart is one of the largest retailers in South Africa with a growing Africa wide presence. It reported total sales of R91 billion in 2016. Its operations is made of well known retail brands like Game, Makro, Builders Warehouse, Dion Wired, Jumbo, Cambridge and Rhino.

Massmart is also generous towards its non-executive directors. The chairperson of the board Kuseni Dlamini got R1.6 million in director fees setting a tone for the rest of the board members. The board features people like Chris Seabrook who earned R1.4 million, Lulu Gwagwa (R600 000), Moses Kgosana (R700 000), Phumzile Langeni (R852 000).
